I would suggest you to check for the issue in clean boot mode.

A clean boot helps to eliminate software conflicts and to determine what is causing the problem. Perform a clean boot on the computer by following the steps given in the link:

Note: Applies for Windows 8.1 also.

Important: After you have finished troubleshooting, refer to the article "How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot" for Windows 8, given under the section "More Information" to reset the computer to start as usual from the above link.

In case anyone is interested (I see there was one "me too") now or in the future, here is how I resolved this: Evidently, when you close a pinned link, such as Hulu, which uses Internet Explorer, even though the app is closed IE remains open. If you then open another app using IE it opens on top of the other. Not really a problem (except maybe a memory drain) unless there is sound coming from the first IE. Now, after playing Hulu and closing the Hulu app, I go to the desktop, open task manager, and stop IE there. No more sound when I open another IE app. BTW, this is not the Hulu Plus app from the store, but just a link to regular Hulu that I pinned to my Start Screen.
